Using the Slow Travel Chat Rooms

The chat rooms are for Gold Star Members only. Link to go to chat rooms. There is also a link in the forums header. You will see a list of chat rooms. To enter one, click on the title. A new small window opens.

Colleen's Chat Rooms Hints

Things I've learned about chatting this past week:

  • You can make the text font bigger (or smaller).
    Click on the "14px" box at the top right of the screen and use the drop down box to change the font size.
  • You can change your posting color.
    Click on the color box next to the text entry box and choose a color.
  • You can use "emoticons".
    Click on the smiling face ( Smile ) next to the text entry box and click on the smiley you want to use.
  • You can use "emotes" (specific phrases). [See list below]
    Type / and the key word for the phrase.
  • You can increase the size of the screen.
    Just like any computer window, click on the "expand" box between "minimize" and "close" at the top right of the window.
  • You can view a chat member's photo/profile.
    Hold your mouse over their name in the chat "Visitor" list at the top right of the screen.
  • You can send a private chat line (whisper) to someone.
    Hold your mouse over their name in the chat "Visitor" list at the top right of the screen. There you will see the Whisper box. Type your comment there and click the button to send. No one else sees it except you and the member you are whispering to.
  • You can tell when someone is typing.
    In the Visitor's list, if you see what looks like a lightning bolt (but is actually a pencil) flashing through someone's head, it means they're typing.

Bug Note: If you view someone's profile in the chat room and their photo fills up the whole whisper space, you are using an older version of Flash. Upgrade to Flash 9. In Internet Explorer, click on Tools > Manage Add Ons. From the list click on "Shockwave Flash Object" then click the UPDATE ACTIVEX button. The software is updated.

Current list of emote key words and phrases

To have an emote appear in the chat, type /and the emote keyword. For example:
/ears - Then the line "Pauline is all ears" is displayed.

In this list, "..." is replaced with your member name.

  • /ears ... is all ears
  • /eyes ... has eyes open wide
  • /hand ... says "talk to the hand"
  • /tears ... is crying big tears for ya!!
  • /hello ... says "hi everyone"
  • /wave ... waves and says "hi" to everyone
  • /bye ... says "bye" to everyone
  • /clap ... applauds wildly
  • /dance ... dances with wolves
  • /ufo ... says "sure I've seen Elvis. He sat between me and Bigfoot on the UFO..."
  • /violin ... says "Hear the tiny violin playing just for you?"
  • /duck ... is ducking and running
  • /ciao ... says "Ciao!"
  • /soup ... says "No soup for you!"
  • /wine ... is pouring another glass of wine
